St Paul Island (Pribiloff)

1300 km out in Berings sound and a little to the side of the Aleutian islands lies the Pribiloffs – well known among birdwatchers for great colonies of Auks and other Seabirds, some of them endemic to the northern Pacific. Red-legged Kittiwake only breeds here and on a few other islands.

The only accessible island in the Pribiloffs is St Paul. Here accommodation is basic, but birds are brilliant. About 3 million seabirds breed on the island, huge amounts of Auks like Crested- & Horned Puffin, Crested- & Parakeet Auklets, Least Auklet, Common- and Brunich´s Guillemot, while Ancient Murrelet is less numerous.

Cormorants are represented by Red-faced- & Pelagic Cormorant. Common Kittiwake and Fulmar of the dark morph also breed here. The Arctic Foxes are also darker. Great looking Gray-crowned Rosy Finch have a local race here, and the same goes for Pacific Wren and Rock Sandpiper. Long-tailed Duck, Harlequin Duck, Bufflehead, Least Sandpiper, Semipalmated Sandpiper are other species often spotted here. From the shore we also scan the sea for White-billed Diver, Emperor Goose and Steller´s Eider - other frequently seen species. St Paul is also a all-known hot-spot for Eurasian vagrants, the list of species are as long as unlikely. If you are into Gulls, you will enjoy scaring the flocks of Glaucous Gulls to find Glaucos-winged Gull, or rarities like Slaty-backed Gull & Vega Gull. We´ll also get acquainted to the worlds biggest colony of Fur Seals.

If weather is good we should be able to get excellent birding and photo opportunities. Birds are generally not difficult to see and get close to here, but the marine climate can also be tough with rain and fog. The weather can also delay the flight home. This is why this extension is put last on the trip to not risk to affect the rest of the itinerary.

The Pribiloffs and St Paul is an extreme destination, but also a dream destination for many birdwatchers and photographers.

The journey is a collaboration between BirdSafarisweden and Karlmark Travel. (Karlmark Travels holds the travel warranty insurance that covers this trip)
